Wine Spectator reports that despite the warm run of recent vintages beginning in 2017, the 2018 vintage in Burgundy is characterized by enough cool nights and sufficient rainfall to maintain freshness. The resulting wines are “fleshy, charming Pinot Noirs with ripe fruit from vintners who interpreted the season correctly and worked diligently in the vineyards.”
Included in the article is an interview with Mounir Saouma, of négociant Lucien Le Moine. Saouma exclaims that his wines are fresh and crisp, thanks to the lengthy aging sur lee for 24 to 36 months. Saouma elaborates that he blocked alcoholic and malolactic fermentations to allow for such lees interaction and allow for a slower fermentation for enhanced freshness. All eight of the Lucien Le Moine reds under review rated 94 points or higher: Bonnes Mares 2018 (97 Points), Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes 2018 (96 Points), Clos de Vougeot 2018 (96 Points).
The report also includes a review of Domaine Chanson Givry 2018, which received 90 points.

Givry is one of the smallest but most famous of the 5 villages in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, in the southern part of Burgundy. Whole bunch maceration really helps this wine to deliver. It brings structure, matter and a touch of spiciness and freshness.
Chanson is a true mid-size Domaine. Unlike many of their competitors, their wines are produced using the grower model rather than the négociant model. They have extensive holdings of over 111 acres of exclusively Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in the heart of Burgundy. Chanson is obsessed with maintaining a consistent quality level across the entire range. The wines have a seductive and distinctive style due to the rigorous approach to viticulture and vinification.
In two decades of work, Lucien Le Moine has become one of the most talked about Burgundy producers, making some of the most sought after wines from the region. The approach is extreme – two people, together doing everything by hand, working with a dazzling array of Burgundy’s great terroirs.
